Minimalist luxury sedan waiting outside a modern airport terminal for a wedding journey

Airport timing is easy to underestimate. The terminal may be close to downtown, the security line may look short, and the map may show a simple drive. Then fog reduces runway capacity, a tunnel backs up, a satellite concourse adds a long walk, or international document checks take longer than expected.

This guide covers four gateway airports travelers often misjudge, alongside our earlier comparisons of Denver and DFW and Charles de Gaulle:

  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)

The recommendations below are planning targets, not guarantees. For a fuller look at the underlying logic, read How Early Should You Get to the Airport? Check the airport’s official security information, your airline’s terminal assignment, and live traffic before leaving.

Airport Arrival Times at a Glance

Airport Recommended arrival time Distance to city center Best public transportation What most often goes wrong
SFO 2.5 hours domestic; 3.5 hours international About 13 miles to downtown San Francisco BART Fog and runway capacity
BOS 2 hours domestic; 3 hours international About 3 miles to downtown Boston MBTA Silver Line SL1 Tunnel traffic and terminal transfers
SEA 2 hours domestic; 3 hours international About 14 miles to downtown Seattle Sound Transit 1 Line I-5 traffic and long internal walks
MIA 2.5 hours domestic; 3.5 hours international About 9 miles to downtown Miami Metrorail Orange Line International processing and confusing layouts

For weddings, add more time than you would for an ordinary business trip. Formalwear, checked luggage, multiple travelers, rental cars, venue access, and fixed ceremony schedules all make a missed connection more consequential.

San Francisco Airport Wait Times: SFO

How early should you arrive at SFO?

Plan to arrive at least 2.5 hours before a domestic departure and 3.5 hours before an international departure.

SFO’s basic airport guidance is generally two hours for domestic flights and three hours for international flights. The additional margin is valuable when you are checking bags, traveling with a group, parking, or continuing to a wedding venue after landing.

Review SFO’s official check-in and security information before leaving. Security estimates can change quickly and do not include airline check-in, bag drop, walking, or boarding time.

Terminals, AirTrain and BART

SFO’s domestic operations use Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3. International departures use the International Terminal, with separate A and G boarding areas.

The free SFO AirTrain connects the terminals, garages, BART station, Grand Hyatt, and Rental Car Center. It operates around the clock. If you are dropped at the wrong terminal, AirTrain is usually the cleanest solution.

BART is one of SFO’s most useful features. The station connects directly with the International Terminal and provides a practical route toward downtown San Francisco and the East Bay. The ride to central San Francisco is roughly 30 minutes, although you should allow extra time for luggage and the transfer from a domestic terminal.

Security, PreCheck and CLEAR

SFO security patterns vary by terminal, checkpoint, airline, and time of day. Early mornings and major travel periods can create heavier queues, while a short checkpoint line does not necessarily mean the airport is low-risk overall.

TSA PreCheck is available at SFO when the appropriate lane is open and your boarding pass shows eligibility. CLEAR operates at multiple SFO terminals, including domestic and international areas. Both programs can save time, but neither removes the need to arrive early. Lane hours and availability can change.

The real SFO risk: fog

SFO is an airport where the runway configuration can matter more than the checkpoint.

Fog and low ceilings may reduce arrival capacity because the parallel runways must be used more conservatively. That can create cascading delays even when the security line is manageable. Check SFO’s weather and runway operations information, as well as your airline’s flight status.

Driving into San Francisco and the Peninsula

Downtown San Francisco is roughly 20 to 30 minutes away in light traffic. During commute periods, event traffic, or poor weather, the same journey can take much longer.

For Peninsula destinations, allow additional time:

  • SFO to Palo Alto: often 30 to 50 minutes
  • SFO to San Mateo: often 15 to 30 minutes
  • SFO to coastal or wine-country routes: highly variable

BART is often best for a solo traveler staying near a downtown station. For wedding guests carrying luggage, wearing formal clothing, or traveling to a Peninsula venue, a prearranged vehicle is usually more comfortable and direct.

Boston Logan Wait Times: BOS

How early should you arrive at Logan?

Plan to arrive at least 2 hours before a domestic departure and 3 hours before an international departure.

Boston Logan is unusually close to downtown, which is a genuine advantage. The airport is only a few miles from central Boston and the Seaport. However, short distance does not always mean short travel time.

The Logan Airport website and FlyLogan resources provide current travel information. Live security estimates should be checked on the day of departure.

Four terminals and a complicated transfer

Logan’s passenger terminals are A, B, C, and E. Terminal E handles international departures. It does not connect like a simple domestic concourse, and travelers should not assume they can move between Terminal E and the other terminals without leaving the secure area.

Free Massport shuttle buses connect the passenger terminals, the Airport Blue Line station, the Rental Car Center, and the water transportation dock. If you must change terminals, allow time for the shuttle, walking, check-in, and another security screening.

This is especially important when a wedding group is flying on different airlines. Confirm each traveler’s terminal before arranging a coordinated pickup.

Security, PreCheck and CLEAR

Logan’s security wait patterns are most noticeable during weekday mornings, holiday travel, and international departure banks. Terminal E deserves the full three-hour international buffer because airline document checks and security processing are separate steps.

TSA PreCheck is available at Logan, subject to lane hours and eligibility. CLEAR is available in selected terminals, including A, B, and E, but not every terminal has the same access. CLEAR speeds identity verification; it does not replace TSA screening.

The real Logan risk: tunnels

The Sumner and Ted Williams tunnels are the main transportation risk, not the airport’s distance from Boston.

Morning and evening congestion can affect journeys between downtown, the Seaport, and Logan. Leave a meaningful buffer if using a private car, taxi, or rideshare. The MBTA Silver Line SL1 is often the most predictable public transportation option from South Station and downtown connections. Service from Logan is free, and the route serves every passenger terminal.

The Blue Line is another option through Airport Station, followed by the free Massport shuttle to the terminals.

A water shuttle is also available from Logan’s water transportation dock. The dock is reached by the Massport shuttle and can be useful for Seaport connections when the schedule aligns. Check Massport’s transportation information before relying on it.

SEA-TAC Wait Times: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

How early should you arrive at SEA?

Plan to arrive at least 2 hours before a domestic departure and 3 hours before an international departure.

For busy morning flights, checked luggage, family travel, or a gate in a satellite concourse, add another 30 to 60 minutes. Review SEA’s official travel tips and current checkpoint information before leaving.

One terminal, four main concourses and a train

SEA is organized as one terminal building with several concourses, including A, B, C, D, North Satellite, and South Satellite. The airport’s internal train system, the SEA Underground, connects the main terminal with the satellite concourses.

The airport is easy to understand once you are inside, but the walk can be long. Alaska Airlines and Delta are major operators at SEA, and gate assignments can vary by airline and flight. Do not rely only on an airline’s usual concourse.

After security, follow signs for the SEA Underground when your gate is in the North or South Satellite. Travelers heading between A, B, C, and D may walk, but a far gate can still take meaningful time.

Security, PreCheck, CLEAR and Spot Saver

SEA’s security patterns are often busiest before 9 a.m., with additional pressure during afternoon and evening peaks. The airport publishes estimated checkpoint wait times.

TSA PreCheck and CLEAR are available at selected checkpoints. SEA also offers SEA Spot Saver, a free reservation system for some travelers using general screening. Spot Saver does not provide TSA PreCheck benefits, so eligible PreCheck passengers should use the dedicated PreCheck lane.

Checkpoint hours and lane availability change. Even with PreCheck or CLEAR, retain your full arrival buffer because airline check-in, bag drop, the internal train, and walking time still matter.

The real SEA risk: I-5 traffic

SEA is about 14 miles from downtown Seattle. Driving time can be 25 to 45 minutes in favorable conditions and significantly longer during peak traffic, construction, or an incident on I-5.

The Sound Transit 1 Line runs from SeaTac/Airport Station toward downtown Seattle. The airport-to-downtown journey is roughly 38 minutes and is often the most predictable option when I-5 is congested.

The train is a strong choice for a solo traveler or a small group with manageable luggage. A private vehicle is more convenient for wedding guests with formalwear, multiple bags, or a venue outside the city.

Miami Airport Wait Times: MIA

How early should you arrive at Miami International?

Plan to arrive at least 2.5 hours before a domestic departure and 3.5 hours before an international departure.

MIA is disproportionately international, with heavy Latin American and Caribbean traffic. International departures require time for airline document verification, check-in, baggage, and security. Peak screening periods commonly occur in the early morning and from midday into the evening.

Review MIA’s official airport security page for current checkpoint information. A historical wait-time average is not a promise for today’s line.

A large, confusing terminal layout

MIA has North, Central, and South terminals. Departures and check-in are on Level 2, while arrivals and baggage claim are generally on Level 1.

The Skytrain runs through Concourse D. Moving walkways and internal connections help, but the terminal can feel confusing when you are carrying luggage or changing areas. Concourse G is not connected airside to Concourse F, so confirm your checkpoint and gate route carefully.

The Rental Car Center is not immediately outside the terminal. The free MIA Mover connects the airport to the Rental Car Center and Miami Intermodal Center. Add time for the train, walking, rental-counter queues, and vehicle pickup.

Security, PreCheck and CLEAR

MIA security queues can become particularly heavy during international departure banks. TSA PreCheck is available at selected checkpoints and depends on operating hours, staffing, and boarding-pass eligibility.

CLEAR provides expedited identity verification at participating checkpoints. MIA has also introduced biometric screening options for eligible travelers, but these programs should be treated as a convenience rather than a reason to shorten your airport buffer.

For international arrivals, allow additional time for passport control, baggage collection, and customs. Travelers connecting onward within the United States generally must collect luggage before clearing customs and rechecking it.

MIA, Fort Lauderdale and cruise travel

MIA is usually the natural choice for Miami, South Beach, Coral Gables, and many South Florida venues. However, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport can be the better option for Port Everglades cruise departures and Broward County weddings.

FLL is close to Port Everglades, but the short road distance does not remove the need for a careful schedule. Cruise check-in, luggage drop, rental-car returns, weekend traffic, and the ship’s embarkation cutoff all need to be considered.

For guests flying into different airports, a coordinated transportation plan is more reliable than leaving every traveler to arrange a separate transfer.

Airport Transfers for Destination Weddings

Minimalist luxury shuttle prepared for coordinated wedding guest airport transfers

These four airports serve very different wedding markets:

  • SFO: Napa, Sonoma, Bay Area coastal venues, Peninsula estates, and San Francisco celebrations
  • Boston Logan: Cape Cod, Boston hotels, New England coast venues, and historic Massachusetts estates
  • Seattle-Tacoma: Pacific Northwest celebrations, island weddings, waterfront venues, and mountain destinations
  • Miami: Caribbean and Latin American destination weddings, Miami celebrations, Florida Keys events, and South Florida venues

For a comparison with other major hubs, see our guide to Atlanta Airport wait times.

Wedding guests rarely arrive on one flight. They arrive across an entire day, often with different airlines, terminals, luggage requirements, and hotel check-in times.

Batching guests into arrival windows is usually more efficient than assigning one car to every flight. A coordinator can group travelers arriving within a practical window, match vehicle sizes to luggage, and create a clear plan for delayed flights.

Our team coordinates airport transfers as part of one wedding brief covering the full weekend. That can include guest airport transportation, hotel movements, the ceremony shuttle, bridal party transportation, and the luxury getaway car.

In Chicago, our home base, we operate with our own local fleet, including luxury sedans, stretch limousines, SUVs, and Sprinter vans. Outside the Chicago metro area, our coordinators plan and own the brief while vetted partner operators deliver the local transportation. You receive one organized plan rather than three separate vendors managing disconnected pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I get to SFO?

Arrive about 2.5 hours before a domestic flight and 3.5 hours before an international flight. Add more time for checked bags, parking, a busy travel period, or a same-day wedding. Fog-related arrival and runway delays can affect the wider airport schedule even when security lines are short.

Is Logan close to downtown Boston?

Yes. Boston Logan is only a few miles from downtown and the Seaport. The difficulty is not distance. Tunnel traffic, terminal transfers, and international processing can add time. The MBTA Silver Line SL1 is often a practical option from downtown and South Station.

Does Seattle have a train from the airport?

Yes. Sound Transit’s 1 Line connects SeaTac/Airport Station with downtown Seattle. The trip takes roughly 38 minutes. Allow additional time for the walk from the airport terminal to the station and for luggage.

Which Miami airport should I fly into?

Choose MIA for Miami, South Beach, Coral Gables, and many Miami-area venues. Consider FLL for Port Everglades cruise departures, Broward County venues, and some Florida destination weddings. Compare the airport’s location with your hotel, venue, and transfer plan before booking.

When the airport is only the first part of a wedding weekend, thoughtful coordination makes every arrival feel calmer, more polished, and more welcoming. Contact Wedding Limo Service to begin a tailored transportation plan.
