Minimalist black-and-white illustration of O'Hare International Airport and an orderly security queue

O’Hare International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States. Your best arrival time depends on more than the departure time printed on your ticket.

The terminal, airline, travel day, security program, checked bags, weather and international processing can all change the calculation.

This guide explains O’Hare TSA wait times, how early to arrive at O’Hare, and what to expect when you are meeting wedding guests at the airport, using the same two-hour domestic and three-hour international baseline as our Atlanta Airport guide.

Quick answer: Plan to arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Treat those numbers as a floor, not a comfortable target, during peak periods or when checking bags.

How Early Should You Arrive at O’Hare?

The standard guidance is simple:

Flight type Minimum planning guidance More comfortable target
Domestic flight with carry-on only 2 hours before departure 2 to 2.5 hours
Domestic flight with checked bags 2 hours before departure 2.5 hours
International departure 3 hours before departure 3 to 3.5 hours
Holiday or severe-weather travel Add 30–60 minutes 3–4 hours, depending on itinerary

Your airline’s check-in, bag-drop and boarding deadlines still apply. A short TSA line cannot make up for arriving after bag drop has closed.

At O’Hare, you also need time to:

  • Find the correct terminal.
  • Park, take a rideshare or walk from the airport transit system.
  • Check bags.
  • Locate the correct security checkpoint.
  • Clear TSA screening.
  • Walk to your gate.
  • Manage an unexpected document, baggage or aircraft issue.

The goal is not to reach the terminal exactly two hours early. The goal is to reach the gate with time to spare.

O’Hare TSA Wait Times by Hour

Security lines change throughout the day. The following pattern is useful for planning, but it is not a live forecast. Staffing, flight schedules and weather can change conditions quickly.

Early morning: the first departure bank

The early morning period can look quiet from outside the airport, but it often creates a concentrated security surge. Many passengers arrive at once for the first large group of departures.

Allow extra time between approximately 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., especially on Monday. Checked-bag counters, parking shuttles and security checkpoints can all become busy together.

Mid-morning: often more manageable

The period from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. is often more comfortable than the first morning bank. It is still wise to follow the two-hour domestic or three-hour international baseline.

Midday and afternoon: schedule-dependent

Security demand can rise again around midday as several airline departure waves overlap. Historical wait-time tracking has shown that Thursday early afternoon can be particularly unpredictable, with some recorded peaks around 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Late afternoon and evening: another busy window

Late afternoon is a major travel period at O’Hare. Business travel, connecting passengers and evening departures can create pressure at the curb, bag drop and checkpoints.

For departures between approximately 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., allow additional time for traffic reaching the airport as well as airport processing.

Which days are busiest?

Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons deserve special attention.

  • Monday morning: Early-week business travel combines with the first major departure bank.
  • Thursday afternoon: Business travel, leisure departures and weekend trips can overlap.
  • Friday: Passenger volume can be high throughout the day, especially before weekends and holidays.
  • Sunday evening: Returning travelers can create substantial terminal and roadway congestion.

For a Monday morning or Thursday afternoon departure, plan for 30–45 minutes for security rather than assuming a short line. Add more if you have checked bags, children, mobility needs or an unfamiliar terminal.

Third-party historical trackers can show useful patterns, but estimates are not guarantees. For the most reliable travel-day information, check your airline’s app and O’Hare’s official TSA checkpoint information.

Terminal-by-Terminal Guide to O’Hare

Your terminal matters. O’Hare’s security checkpoints are not one interchangeable airport-wide line.

Always confirm the assigned terminal in your airline app or reservation on the day of travel. Terminal assignments can change.

Terminal 1: United and international departures

Terminal 1 is primarily associated with United Airlines and includes Concourses B and C. It has multiple security checkpoints, so the correct checkpoint depends on your concourse and airline instructions.

Terminal 2: several major carriers

Terminal 2 commonly serves airlines such as Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Delta and JetBlue, among others. Check your reservation carefully because airline operations can change between terminals.

Terminal 3: primarily American Airlines

Terminal 3 is primarily used by American Airlines and includes Concourses G, H, K and L. It has several checkpoints with different operating hours.

Terminal 5: O’Hare’s international terminal

Terminal 5 is O’Hare’s main international terminal. It also serves selected domestic flights and airlines, so do not assume every Terminal 5 passenger is traveling internationally.

Terminal 5 is separate from Terminals 1, 2 and 3. A domestic checkpoint in another terminal will not solve a Terminal 5 departure. If your airline assigns Terminal 5, go there directly.

The main Terminal 5 checkpoint, CP10, is listed as open 24 hours. However, PreCheck, CLEAR, airline counters and gate operations have their own hours. Verify everything before leaving home.

Review O’Hare’s airline directory and confirm your terminal with the carrier.

What PreCheck and CLEAR Change

TSA PreCheck

TSA PreCheck can reduce the time spent in screening because eligible travelers generally use a dedicated lane and follow a simpler screening process.

You may usually keep on shoes, belts and light jackets, and leave laptops and compliant liquids in your carry-on. Procedures can vary.

A recent airport-wide estimate placed PreCheck waits around six minutes, compared with ordinary security estimates often ranging from 15 to 30 minutes. These are planning figures, not promises.

PreCheck does not remove the need to arrive early. Lines can close, lanes can have limited hours, and your boarding pass must show the correct eligibility.

CLEAR+

CLEAR speeds up identity verification through biometric screening. It is not a replacement for TSA PreCheck.

  • CLEAR: Faster identity verification.
  • TSA PreCheck: Expedited physical screening.
  • CLEAR plus PreCheck: The most efficient combination when both lanes are available.

CLEAR’s published O’Hare hours vary by terminal and day. For example, Terminal 5 CLEAR hours are listed as approximately 4:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 4:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday. Hours can change, particularly during holidays.

Check the current CLEAR O’Hare location information before relying on the service.

Global Entry

Global Entry applies to arrivals into the United States, not ordinary departure security.

Approved Global Entry members may use the appropriate CBP processing channel when returning from an international trip. You must already be approved. Enrollment or application status does not provide immediate access.

Global Entry is separate from TSA screening, although many Global Entry members receive TSA PreCheck eligibility after adding their Known Traveler Number correctly to a reservation.

What Can Make the Estimate Wrong?

Even a normal O’Hare TSA wait time can become irrelevant when another part of the journey slows down.

Checked bags

Bag drop may take longer than security. Allow additional time if you have multiple bags, oversized luggage, sports equipment or special documentation.

Holidays

Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, spring break and major holiday weekends can create long lines at the curb, airline counters and checkpoints.

Weather elsewhere

A storm at another airport can create a ground stop, delayed aircraft rotation or a sudden wave of rebooked passengers. O’Hare may become crowded even when Chicago’s weather is clear.

International departures

International flights often involve document checks, passport review, additional airline procedures and longer walking distances, a pattern our Denver and DFW guide and Charles de Gaulle guide also describe. Use the three-hour baseline.

O’Hare traffic

Roadway congestion can be severe during weekday rush hours. A short terminal wait does not help if the drive to the airport takes an extra 30 minutes.

A Simple O’Hare Departure Checklist

Before leaving for O’Hare:

  1. Confirm your terminal and airline.
  2. Check the flight status in the airline app.
  3. Complete online check-in.
  4. Review bag-drop and boarding deadlines.
  5. Confirm your TSA PreCheck or CLEAR status appears correctly.
  6. Check weather in Chicago and at your destination.
  7. Remove prohibited items and organize liquids.
  8. Keep your ID, passport and boarding pass accessible.
  9. Add 30–60 minutes for holidays, checked bags or disruption.
  10. Plan to be at the gate, not merely inside the terminal, before boarding begins.

O’Hare arrival rule of thumb

Situation Recommended arrival at the terminal
Domestic, carry-on, familiar with O’Hare 2 hours early
Domestic, checked bag 2–2.5 hours early
Domestic, Monday morning or Thursday afternoon 2.5 hours early
International departure 3 hours early
International, checked bags or no expedited screening 3–3.5 hours early
Holiday, major weather event or airport disruption Add 30–60 minutes

Arriving at O’Hare for a Chicago Wedding

Departing passengers can plan around one flight. Wedding guests usually cannot.

Guests may land throughout the day. One family may arrive before breakfast, another group around midday and the wedding party later in the afternoon. A transportation plan that treats every arrival as one event quickly becomes complicated.

Terminal 5 arrivals take longer

International arrivals at Terminal 5 must generally complete:

  1. CBP immigration inspection.
  2. Baggage claim.
  3. Agriculture and customs screening.
  4. Exit to the arrivals area.

O’Hare explains that international processing can be affected by many factors and is rarely more than two hours, but the long-tail risk matters. Non-U.S. citizens, first-time ESTA travelers, checked luggage and busy arrival banks can all increase the wait.

Guests arriving from preclearance locations such as Canada or Ireland may follow a different process and may arrive through the domestic terminals. Their airline and itinerary determine the details.

Batch guests into arrival windows

Instead of scheduling a separate vehicle for every flight, consider organizing arrivals into practical windows:

  • Morning arrivals.
  • Midday arrivals.
  • Afternoon arrivals.
  • Evening arrivals.

A guest who lands at 9:20 a.m. may not be ready at the curb until 10:15 or 10:45 after baggage and customs. Building in a reasonable collection window creates a calmer experience and can make group transportation more efficient.

The pickup location matters

O’Hare has multiple terminals, arrival levels and traffic restrictions. Guests also need clear instructions about:

  • Which terminal they are using.
  • Where to collect luggage.
  • Where the driver or coordinator will meet them.
  • What to do if customs takes longer.
  • How to contact the transportation team if a flight changes.

For Chicago weddings, Wedding Limo Service coordinates airport transfers for wedding guests as part of a single brief covering the entire wedding weekend. That brief can include airport arrivals, bridal party transportation, guest shuttles and the newlyweds’ getaway car.

It is a more composed alternative to having separate companies manage the airport, the wedding shuttle and the getaway vehicle.

Our own fleet serves the Chicago metro area. For celebrations outside Chicago, our coordinators plan and own the transportation brief while vetted partner operators deliver the local service.

How Long Does It Take to Get from O’Hare to Downtown Chicago?

O’Hare is approximately 17–18 miles from downtown Chicago.

Typical driving times are:

  • Light traffic: 25–35 minutes.
  • Normal daytime traffic: 30–50 minutes.
  • Morning rush: 40–65 minutes.
  • Evening rush: 45–75 minutes.
  • Severe weather, construction or major events: Longer than 75 minutes.

For a wedding guest arriving with checked luggage, allow at least 60–90 minutes from landing to downtown in ordinary conditions. During the evening rush, a 90–120-minute planning window is more comfortable.

The CTA Blue Line is often more predictable for independent travelers and typically takes approximately 45–60 minutes to reach the Loop.

O’Hare TSA Wait Times FAQ

How early should I arrive at O’Hare?

Arrive at least two hours before a domestic departure and three hours before an international departure. Add 30–60 minutes for checked bags, holidays, severe weather, Monday mornings or Thursday afternoon travel.

How long is security at O’Hare right now?

There is no single airport-wide answer. Recent estimates have commonly ranged from approximately 15–30 minutes, while PreCheck estimates can be shorter. Check your terminal, airline app and current airport guidance before leaving. Historical averages cannot guarantee today’s wait.

Is two hours enough for a domestic flight?

Two hours is the recommended minimum for many domestic flights. It may be enough when you have a carry-on, know the terminal and travel outside a peak period. It is not a comfortable target for checked bags, holidays, early Monday departures or major disruptions.

Which terminal is international at O’Hare?

Terminal 5 is O’Hare’s primary international terminal. Some international passengers arriving from preclearance locations may enter through Terminals 1, 2 or 3, and selected domestic flights also use Terminal 5. Confirm your itinerary with the airline.

How long does it take to get from O’Hare to downtown Chicago?

Driving usually takes 25–35 minutes in light traffic and 45–75 minutes during busy periods. Allow 60–90 minutes from landing to downtown when collecting bags and arranging ground transportation.
